New South Wales Registry of Births, Deaths & Marriages

www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/searchHistoricalRecords.htm

The Registry's historical records are referred to as Online Historical Indexes. Historical Indexes show limited information about birth, death and marriage records in the following years:

  • Births 1788 to 1908
  • Deaths 1788 to 1978
  • Marriages 1788 to 1958

The Historical Indexes are available on the Registry's website and all searches of the Indexes are free.

All Australian State and Territory Registries are working together to develop consistent access years for Family History Indexes and Certificates. This national approach will take into account the need to protect an individual’s privacy and the need to minimise the potential for fraud.

A search result from the Online Historical Indexes contains the following information:

  • First name
  • Last name
  • Year the event was registered
  • District (place the event was registered)
  • Unique Registration Number
  • Parent's given names

If you want further information about a record, you can purchase a Family History Certificate online. As the record you have chosen includes the registration number, you will receive a discounted fee of just $27.00 per certificate compared to the standard fee of $35.00.

The Registry's website uses the latest high security technology to protect your personal and financial details.

If you do not want to order a Family History Certificate online, you have the option of completing a Family History application form that can be mailed or faxed to the Registry. The completed application form can also be delivered in person to a Country Courthouse, Government Access Centre or a Registry office.

Again, if you supply the registration number on the application form, you will receive a discounted fee of $27.00 per certificate ordered.
